My Clients Describe Me as Warm, Realistic, and Caring
Someone with a good sense of humor who can help them feel at ease. Having worked in private practice for over twenty years, I am passionate about what I do. Before becoming a therapist, I was a middle and high school English teacher. Working with both gifted and remedial students, I became aware of the needs and challenges teens face. I created and taught courses in mediation and interpersonal communications, and worked as a school counselor on both the elementary and secondary levels. As an elementary counselor, I wrote plans to help emotionally and physically challenged students (504), and helped develop goals for those with IEP’s (individualized education plans). It seemed like a natural progression that I would move from working with students in schools to working with them and their families in private practice.
My Background
Includes a BA in English Literature from Boston University, a MA in Teaching from Simmons University in Boston, a Pupil Personnel Credential from UCSD (University of CA, San Diego), and an MA in Counseling Psychology from National University. A life long learner, I continually search for, explore, and integrate creative approaches when working with clients.
My Training Includes Counseling at Various Facilities.
While working at a San Diego hospice, I traveled to the homes of bereaved families, counseling them after the death of a loved one. I later became aware of the many losses that go unrecognized such as the loss of a beloved pet. Many see their pet as an important family member, and feel foolish when that pet passes and there’s no one who can appreciate the depth of their sorrow. Another unrecognized loss is the transition many college students face when moving away from home for the first time. I found this to be true when working at SDSU (San Diego State University) as a counselor for their students.
